Media Literacy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqz2R8TXSfc

The video I watched was about Media Literacy. They talked about how media is always everywhere you go and it is always part of your everyday life. You may even wear media everyday as well. Media can have the good and can also have the negative affects. Media is on the windows of a gas station, on the bulletin boards, the backpack you may have, and even on the big semi-trucks.
Another message that the video had for the audience was to be media literate. In other words to be aware of what media is really trying to do, so you won't fall into the spell of getting lured into what ever they are advertising. Most families watch an average of 3 hours of TV a day, and about 1000 plus hours for the whole year. Also an American family may have at least 2 television sets per household.
With all this media, it seems like our world is getting worse. We are getting a decline in Civic Engagement, and not many people are involved to make our world a better place.

"Merchants of Cool"

In the film Merchants of Cool, it was interesting how different merchants approached the way they did things, or the apparel they made, or how to run a show so they can satisfy teenagers. Also in the film the main thing was “cool.” Cool was being discussed in the beginning of the film and merchants wanted to know what cool was or what was cool for teenagers now.
What really caught my eye was how many ads a day teens see or are exposed too. In a day teens are exposed to 3000 ads in a day and by the time they are 18 years old, they have seen about 10 million ads. It is also interesting as well how the teenagers are affected right away from the ads that they see on television. When a teenager sees let’s say a new iPod, then the teenagers is going to want a new iPod even if they already have one. What was also said was how teens control the economy; they buy whatever they want and whatever they must have. Teenagers spend a lot of money so they can look good and be a part of the world. If teenagers don’t have the recent trends, or they are not in style than they won’t feel like they are cool. If a new electronic device comes out, than teenagers are going to want to have it right away and some beg their parents to buy it for them. If something new comes out, then it is a must have. Teenagers also today have to look like the celebrities that walk on the red carpet. They have to have what they have and they want the lifestyle that the celebrities have because it’s cool.
As the generations go cool keeps changing and gets better and better every time. Merchants are desperate to make money and another way they do it is by having correspondents. A correspondent is a person who finds the cool in the teenagers. From what the film says, being a correspondent is hard work and it is hard to find teens like that. Also they found that teenagers like what understands who they are and what they like. Once a merchant finds the cool, it becomes uncool. Teenagers also try to imitate musicians and they try and start their own bands just so they can be cool and look cool. As the years pass, I think the teenagers are getting more and more spoiled. Even younger children already have cell phones. Some children are getting cell phones at the age of 8 or 9. As you grow older that tends to die down and you don’t want as much things as you did when you were younger. Maybe because you’re kind of on your own and you pay some of your own bills that you have acquired. Either our world of teenagers will get worse or if we do something about it, the ways of teen thinking can change.

Media and Youth

When it comes to media and the youth, its not a very good combination. The reason why I say this is because of how much or easily the youth is affected right away from the media that they are exposed too. I have seen how much the youth is affected by the media everyday and it seems like it is getting worst every time.
For instance, I have a niece who is 11 years old and other cousins. and what I have noticed about them is that they get affected by media right away. They may get affected in a positive or a negative way but it still gets to them. An example is probably Hannah Montana, and High School Musical. When they first came out, they were already popular. They became popular so fast that my niece and other cousins wanted to be like Hannah Montana. They were dressing like her, asking for all her clothes she had, all the accessories that was out, and they even had wigs to have hair like Hannah Montana. It affected some children when Hannah Montana and Vanessa Hudgens were both caught, and some of the young girls were doing what they were doing because they thought it was cool or ok.
Boys are also affected in the same way, except they are more violent because they watch other things like Power Rangers, Wrestling, and the newest thing is UFC Fighting. These are some of the media that boys watch and try to imitate either at home or at school because they think its cool.
Media has either a positive or a negative affect, but most of the time it is negative. Children get to attached.

"The Corporation"

First off, a corporation is one form of business ownership. Basically to the employees of corporations, they see a corporation as a person. Therefore, the corporation is treated like a person. To me that seem to be the excuse or the reason why they are so selfish, is because they see it as a person and treat it like one. Another thing is the corporation is harm to workers, because of layoff. The corporations are known as the externalization team. What was discussed in the video also was how the big corporations such as Nike, Liz Claiborne, and Kathie Lee all have expensive clothes and shoes. Yet, they only pay the workers who make and do all the work about 10 cents an hour or similar to that. If that is what they pay the workers, than they shouldn't sell their clothing or shoes for so much. The workers that are hired to work are the ones who are desperate and will do anything to make money. Such as people in other countries who are barely getting by. Once they have paid enough money, they then move to a different place and pay them the same. The cycle keeps going and they move around to different places because they know that people will work for them.
I wasn’t so shocked at what “The Corporation” was. I had seen a movie similar to that and at that I was very surprised and shocked at what corporations do just to have money in their hands. They don’t think about the world or how negatively it will be affected. Yet, we as the customers still go out and spend our money on them, just so they can have more money to come up with something else to make our world worse than it already is. It’s interesting how people worked for them and after they do find out what the corporations are all about they quit. There are also many constraints on corporate form, yet people still work for them because they are just there for the money even if they already know that it is wrong. The corporations are looked at as a metaphor, maybe like an eagle or Frankenstein in the movie.
Locally owned stores are not being supported because of the bigger stores that the corporations put up. One of the biggest stores that is all over or everywhere you go is wal-mart. Wal-mart is one of the most popular stores that we always go to whenever we are in need of anything. We never go to the locally owned stores to but whatever we need. Maybe one of the reasons is because most of the time the locally owned stores don’t have the stuff we need. In conclusion, many corporations or all corporations do anything and harm people or animals in other places so they can get money. But some corporations had environmental violations, and paid so much money for the violations. Corporations should at least have some sympathy and not be so selfish to get what they want.

Consumption Log

February 14, 2009

-Tv-Commercials

  • McDonald's- it affected me by making me think about food and how hungry I was because I hadn't eaten any breakfast yet.

  • Chevy- This commercial affected me by looking at my future because it has always been a goal or dream to have a chevy truck someday.

  • Ford- Didn't have much of an affect on me because I really don't care about ford. I'm more of a chevy fan.

  • NBA All-Star- That affected me by wanting to watch the All-Star game.

-Stores

-Radio- All the songs that played on the radio has had some sort of affect on me, because I listen to the lyrics and it just makes me think about life or maybe something close to what the song is about. All the advertisements on the radio are or seem fake so sometimes I don't bother to listen to them, but on the tv I tend to listen.

-Hotels

-Billboard signs

  • San Juan college- The billboard didn't have much affect on me, probably because I'm already going to school.
  • DWI billboards- Those types of billboards can affect people in different ways, depending on the situation or how they feel about drinking. It affected me in a positive way because I don't want any DWI's anything with alcohol.

-Wal-Mart- Wal-Mart really has an affect but not so much because I know there is a lot of items and clothing that are name brand, but those don't have an affect on me.

-Denny's

-Wedding: Different brands of clothing, shoes, and the decorations.

-Reception: Brisk Tea, Hershey Kisses, and Aquafina.

Reaction on Jean Baudrillard

The following reading was pretty difficult to understand and a few of the terms were hard to understand as well. Although it was a very interesting article about simulacra and simulations. He tries to help us understand what simulations are and what they mean. He does that by telling us a Borges’ story and uses a map and replicates the original territory. One thing that he talked about was the real is no longer real, I don’t understand what he means by that exactly.
In today’s world, we have simulacra, which means the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyper real. So what I’m guessing that Baudrillard is saying is that there is too much real, and sometimes the real substitutes for itself? He also argues that there are four phases of the image: one that reflects a basic reality, one that masks or perverts a basic reality, one that masks the absence of a basic reality, and one that bears no relation to any reality.
So with that, what she is trying to say also is that “illusion is not possible.” The only place that illusions are possible is Disneyland or Disneyworld. It is a place of illusions and phantasms. Then again it is said that the real is no longer real. We all want to live a world where we want to believe that nothing is real because our world is changing and is not working in the way people want it too. Another thing is that when you visit those sites such as Disneyland, is that reality does not exist outside those borders but inside they do exist.
Another thing is that children don’t understand all this yet, because the children still have an imagination. They like to go to places like that because they are imagining and want to make their imaginations true. Older students are now aware of all this and they can determine whether it is real or unreal.

Media Consumption

Media is a part of everyone’s life. What people don’t see or notice is that Media is a part of their life. Media is everywhere. Media can be found beside the road or the shirt you are wearing. Sometimes media can have both a positive and negative effect on people and also on the younger generation.
I have recorded all the media that I was exposed to on one day. There was a lot of media that I ran into and throughout the day I had to think about media and determine whether or not it was considered media, and how it affected me and the people around. It was an interesting experience because I never had to really think about media and the ways it affected me. I did my consumption on Saturday, and I was exposed to media more on that particular day because I was in Farmington for a wedding and then traveled to Fruitland.
My day started off and the media I was exposed to first thing in the morning was the television. I started to watch the television and many different commercials were coming on such as H&R Block, MC Donald’s, Chevy, Ford, and many other different commercials. The way that affected me was the McDonald’s commercial made me think about food but specifically breakfast. The Chevy commercial affected me by wanting a truck someday in the future, and as for the Ford it didn’t affect me much because I don’t care for Ford. Those were the different ways that the commercials affected me. I also stayed at a hotel in Farmington, Marriott-Courtyard. I also went to Wal-mart and was exposed to many media there, from clothes, shoes, shampoos, and valentine gifts that they had. But there was quite a lot of media in Wal-mart. The clothing I also wore that day was from Vanity clothing and also the many different brands that everyone was wearing at the wedding. As we drove to the wedding reception, there were many stores and bill boards that we saw along the way. The way the clothing had an effect on me was by the expense of the clothing and how nice we have to dress for special occasions such as weddings. All the gifts at the wedding, because it was different brands of certain purchased items from the stores. As the day progressed, I stayed at the wedding, than at the reception I drank a Brisk Ice tea, and ate some hershey kisses. After the reception we headed back to Farmington and there I was exposed to more stores and all the signs that I passed along the way. When we got back to the hotel, we watched more TV and saw more commercials. With the commercials showing I had to think about them and ask myself if what they present is really true. For instance when they advertise a product I had to distinguish between it being real or fake. I am starting to see things that weren’t there before, so when I see commercials I just don’t care to watch them anymore. There was also alcohol that I was exposed to; it affected me by thinking and wondering why people drink or party when we know it’s not a good thing to do. I also saw the NBA All-Star commercial and with that, I wanted to watch the NBA All-star game and that was how it affected me.
My day consisted of many different media and either had an affect or it didn’t have an effect on me. It was really interesting for me to watch out and be more alert and keep track of everything that I did the whole day. There is no doubt that no one is every exposed to media, because everyone is exposed to media every day.

Radio Lab- War of the Worlds

Our assignment the other day was to listen to the War of the Worlds radio broadcasting. My reaction is that it is very surprising how they were able to accomplish all that going on and make it a believable situation. I can say that it was easy to do something like this in that time. As we talked in class about doing something similar to that, we came up with ideas but than again, I don't think it would be possible to achieve something like this in our day today, due to all the advance technology we have now. It's just interesting how people reacted to this back than and it was a serious deal for some people because it was so realistic. It was an interesting radio broadcasting and I enjoyed listening to it.

One Tree Hill

This week's One Tree Hill was about Jamie Scott, the child of Nathan and Haley Scott. Lucas and his fiance were getting married and during the ceremony, Jamie was kidnapped by his former Nanny. After the Ceremony, everyone was looking for him and they even told the cops because he was no where in site. As the day went on they were looking but had no luck. The nanny had taken him to a Motel room and the nanny wanted to keep Jamie as her own son. Jamie's grandpa, Dan Scott, found where Jamie was at and he took him to his parents. Jamie didn't return home til later that night and everyone was happy in tears of joy.
